01 / THE DISCOVERYA weakness that predated ELX
During its security work, ELX identified an insecure direct object reference (IDOR) vulnerability in an application built independently of ELX. The flaw was pre-existing: ELX neither developed the affected application originally nor introduced the weakness. The finding highlighted a critical gap between verifying identity and enforcing permission to access a specific resource.
02 / WHY IT MATTEREDAn ordinary request can carry extraordinary risk
IDOR vulnerabilities can allow an authenticated user to attempt access to a resource belonging to someone else. In a business application, the important boundary may be the customer account, business unit, or resource owner. A valid session cannot substitute for checking those boundaries on every sensitive request.
03 / THE NEXT CHAPTERFrom a point-in-time discovery to ongoing visibility
Cognis now monitors the distributor's applications through integrated instrumentation that supplies real-time application logs. Its behavioral analysis examines activity for suspicious patterns, creating an ongoing security-monitoring capability rather than relying exclusively on a one-time assessment.
04 / WHAT CHANGEDThe weakness became visible. The monitoring became continuous.
The engagement established a concrete security finding and an active Cognis monitoring deployment. Those are meaningful operational outcomes. We are not claiming a measured reduction in incidents, automated blocking, or a completed remediation of the IDOR vulnerability without additional confirmation.
